Katy Perry’s upcoming concert film Part of Me may be just the beginning for the singer. Perry reportedly wants to play the girlfriend of Queen singer Freddie Mercury in a new film that stars Sasha Baron Cohen as the legendary frontman.

The forthcoming movie is being produced by Graham King (The Departed) and will likely be directed by Stephen Frears. Cohen is already working with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor on the film. Now a source told NME that Perry wants the role of Mary Austin, Mercury’s girlfriend. The source said, “Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan. She would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha.”

Austin and Mercury were together for six years during the 1970s and she remained one of his closest confidants after they separated. Mercury, who died as a result of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991, often described Austin as the love of his life and was one of the first people he told when he was diagnosed as HIV positive. Perry’s interest in the role presumes that Austin will play an important role in the film. It’s yet unclear what parts of Mercury’s life the film will depict.

If Perry’s interest in the role is real (and, ya know, not just a rumor) then we’re not sure what we think of it. Certainly Perry is fun, but she doesn’t look anything like Austin. Check out the photo of Mercury and Austin below and decide for yourself.
